Last week, I wrote about connecting APLS to apples, about finding like minded people and building relationships with them, about constructing the foundation of a green social movement. It occurred to me that, while blog land is chock full of APLS, many of us are unaware of the other's existence. We cross paths without a comment or reside in different blog circles. Even after inhabiting the blog-o-sphere for a year, I occasionally stumble on a blog I've never read or I encounter a newly grown apple.
In an effort to help us APLS connect a bit more online, if not in person - though that can happen too! - I'm setting up a Bushel Basket on my sidebar where I'll list all APLS, blogging and non-blogging, so that we can get to know each other a bit more.
If you are an APLS (with or without a blog), please leave a comment so that I can add you to my virtual Bushel Basket.
I'll keep the Bushel Basket up for a month so please come back to take a peek. Select an APLS and take a bite. All are guaranteed to be homegrown and crunchy.

For those of you wondering what an APLS is, the short answer is someone who cares about the state of the planet and folks living on it, who lives beneath their means, gives to charity and enjoys a lighter lifestyle. If you read this blog, you are probably an apple. For the longer answer, visit my prior post.
Many of you have commented that you are working on it but are not yet officially an APLS. Close enough!!! All you need is the desire to be an APLS. We're all working on it.
Finally, with regard to the Affluent ("A" part of the acronym), it refers to affluence worldwide. Check out where you fall on the global rich list.
Please jump in. None of us are truly ripe, some of us are a bit rotten but all of us are moving in the right direction.

I'm an APLS! I also never sleep! That didn't have to do with anything, but it's past midnight, and I know I should be showering and going to bed, and yet, hear I am reading your blog....
This all sounds fascinating! Not something I can embark on fully right now...but inspiring to read about!
Cxx
I'm an apple. A green apple. But a little sour sometimes. And I think I have worms.
I love this idea a bushel and a peck. I've done some back reading here and I guess I'm an APLS. Heck, I grew up on an apple orchard, so I love it.
You've inspired me to try to meet up with other APLS in my area. I've commented a few times that it's hard to meet like-minded people, since I'm not a parent and I'm a homebody... but I really like the green book club idea and maybe I'll look into starting one.
Cool idea! I'm definitely an APLS. It's a good thing you're putting us all in the same basket. Looks like burbanmom might need a little help there :)
Lovely idea to continue blog community-building. I'd love to be added to the list and I can't wait to check out everybody else! Thanks for putting this together.
At first, I thought I might be able to classify myself as APLS, but then, I read the article that was linked, and my family didn't quite fit the income guidelines :). In all other respects, we probably fit, though. I just don't want to give anyone the idea that we're "rich", because we're not. We're not "affluent" either. We probably fit in the "well-off" category, though ;).
There are lots of places where you can find APLS - SustainLane, Huddler, Facebook and other social networking sites...
How do you define APLS? I have seen the discussions but haven't dug up the post where it is defined. What's the elevator pitch?
According to the Gobal Rich List, I'm fabulously wealthy, so i certainly fit the definition. And I have the cute button on my blog!
I'm striving to be an APLS but didn't know there was a name for it. If I go down the checklist, it's most like goals I'm trying to achieve rather than have succeeded in.
What an interesting concept. Yes, I'm an APLS, and striving to be more so.
I'd like to second burbanmom's sentiment.
green apl indeed.
Good idea! You're a great organizer, GB. I'm an APLS, and like Deanna, striving to be more of one every day.
I am a chocolate colored apple. Grouchy on the outside and softy on the inside. And I like bookworms.
Oh, put me in the APLS basket. You know I'm happy to be in the bushel and I promise not to be the bad apple. A little bruised from time to time from falling from the green tree. You know, with birthday parties and such, but I still am crunchy and sweet if you take out the bruised parts! :o)
I working on being a better APLS, as I currently meet about half the checklist. Please toss me in the bushel with the rest - hopefully some of everyone else's good APLS tricks and thoughts will rub off on me!
yet another great idea! throw me in the basket too!
I'm not officially an APLS, but I am trying to learn to live sustainably. I enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to checking out others on your bushel list!
Throw me in the basket too! I am not completely ripe but I am working on it!
I'm an aspiring APLS. Maybe I'm still an apple blossom? So I'm not sure if I'm eligible to be included in the basket or if I need to be left on the tree for a little longer?
You can put me in there too - I appreciate having a "master list" of all the people who read these blogs - then later when I have lots of free time (ha!) I can go check out everyone's blog and have a fantastically set up reader!
Wow! What an impressive array of puns! I'm still not crazy about the "affluent" bit; I know it refers to a global view, but it seems off-putting to the uninitiated. Yet I would be pleased to be tossed in the basket. I can't speak to whether I am sweet or tart(maybe saucy?), but I do pair well with crackers and cheese.
You know, Jenn, we should start an APLS group on Facebook....maybe I'll do that in all my abundant spare time. I don't know how GB manages her fifty million projects....
ooh a facebook group...that's a good idea! I've never started a group before but I don't mind poking around; it can't be too hard to figure it out...
Count me in!
I'm working on being an apl. Great idea!
Arduous: Of course you are! And yes, you never sleep.
Claire: Are you sure you don't want to jump in?? No action needed on your part but to throw your name in the bushel.
Burbs: No kidding! Me too. I'm kind of squishy around the middle but, hey, cook me in an apple pie and I'm all deliciousness.
Abbie: There you have to throw all the technical "apple" lingo out at me! ;-) I'm a homebody too - truly. The book club was a good way for me to start for that reason. I hope you do it. If you do, stick with it. The first few months were tough. 8 or 9 months later, it's paying off big time!
Heather: Yes, I figured all of our characteristics would rub off on each other. Seriously, though, even though we are all APLS, we all think a little bit different and it is nice to get as many viewpoints as possible.
Purloined Letter: Thank you for participating! It's nice to get to know everyone a little bit better.
Wendy: See my addition to the initial post. It is Affluence in a global sense. Most of us here in the US fall into that category compared to folks in other countries. I know though. People do balk at the Affluent part of the acronym. Whatever!! I'm tossing you in the bushel basket anyway. You are definitely an apple!
Jennconspiracy: Social networking what?? Just kidding. I have some basic familiarity with those sites but no working knowledge. Hey, I can now text on my phone! That's what happens when you have little kids - you are temporarily cut off from all that is cool in the world. As to what an APLS is, I added the definition at the bottom of my post. You, my dear, are absolutely apple-i-cious. I'm tossing you in whether you like it or not.
Joyce: Yeah, Joyce! Isn't it nice to hobnob with all these rich folk. ;-)
Joan: They are all goals for me too. This is all a work in progress but there are more and more people out there like us, caring about the same thing, migrating in the same direction. Arduous thought we should have a better name than YAWN (or Greenfluencer). Hence, APLS.
Deanna: Delicious! We all try to ripen a bit every day.
Spelled with K: Hi, green apl. Welcome to the basket.
Electronic Goose: Why thank you! It's so nice to connect more and in different ways with other APLS hanging on the tree.
Beany: Oh, those are my favorite kind of apples. Do you have those little chocolate sprinkles on you too? I like bookworms too!
Eco Burbs: Oh yeah. I've got bruises galore but, like you said, we're still sweet if you eat around the mushy parts.
Lori: I've yet to meet a complete APLS so consider yourself in good company.
Melissa: Plop! You're in.
Bobbi: Don't underestimate your appleness. You are in. I put in the Book Nook site but might the Greenhands one be more appropriate? I couldn't decide.
Bugs: You are in. Ripen away with the rest of us.
Green Resolutions: Pshaw! You're ready to be in the bushel basket. In you go.
Jam: The bushel basket and your google reader thank you.
Robin: Oh, apples with cheese. Yum. As to the Affluent part, I know, I know. Many people do balk at it. Wanna come up with an alternative for the "A" because we can't lose the apple thing now that I've got a bushel basket, a post about picking apples and look out for all kinds of cute apple-punned posts planned. ;-)
Arduous, Melissa and Jenn: A facebook or other social networking site would be awesome. Like I said before, I'm culturally incapable of setting up something like that. Melissa, it sounds like you'll do a facebook one? Maybe Arduous and Jenn can help or have ideas for one of the other networking sites? I'd love to see this movement grow and people to get connected all over the place.
And how do I manage my projects, I email folks like Arduous and say "hey, I have this idea. Wanna do a project together" and then Miss "In All My Spare Time" throws something together before I have a chance to check my email again.
Einat: Plunk.
Domestic Accident: What a cute little apple you are. A pink lady?
I guess I'm counted as one too. I don't think about it as change though. I've been pretty non materialistic all my life. I've had a compost pile and a veggie garden for 20 some odd years, basically since I've had enough land to put it on. My parents are better at it than I am. When I grew up, they kept turkeys, ducks and geese; had a large garden; had a greenhouse; we ground our own wheat (I won't say they, because we had one mill that was powered and one that was hand cranked, and guess who did the most hand cranking?); the bread was homemade sourdough, from a starter that is over a 100 years old); they have had solar for over 25 years (they live in the mountains of Colorado and spend about $50 a year to heat their home), and are thinking of PV; my mom canned a lot of produce; she bought what she didn't grow in bulk from the local coop and canned or froze it; my dad hunted deer. So I've back slid a lot since my childhood. But at least I've taught my kids to be non materialists too. Thats probably the most important thing. Now if only I could get them to eat from the garden.
Count me in please - we've made some changes and are working on a few more. I am constantly inspired by the many others out there and look forward to discovering a few new people and their ideas! Thanks!
OK, the APLS group is live on facebook! it's an open group so anybody can join...check it out!
That's such a cool idea, although I'll be sad when the month's over and all the links are gone. It's too bad you can't add a page or something with the links on it. Ah well, I'll use the list this month to read some new-to-me blogs.
I agree with everyone who's going to use this as a reading list! Please add me although I have a loooong way to go. I may still be an apple blossom! Hope to meet you in person soon.
What a nice idea! Thanks for putting together a list!
Count me in too. I haven't been blogging too much lately, but I've been taking small steps for years.
I have an edible landscape, water with saved water from my downspouts, flush the toilet with saved shower water, and bike to get my groceries on my X-tracycle.
Cheers,
James
Daphne: Wow! What an upbringing you had. I bet we could all learn a lot from you. And maybe together we can get all our kids to eat from the garden.
Dramamama: Delighted to include you. We're all at various stages and none of us are "there yet" - at least I'm not.
Melissa: YOU ROCK! So totally cool. And you finally shamed me into getting a Facebook account. Now I need to pretty it up after the kids go to bed.
Stephanie: Stay tuned. We're working on an idea. If you (or anyone) have any ideas, please share them. I truly want the APLS thing to be something everyone can work on, join in, be a part of and grow.
MamaBird: Don't we all have a long way to go. That is why it will be more fun to ripen together. Hope to hook up with you this weekend.
Rebecca: Thank you for throwing yourself in the basket!
James: Helllooooo! You didn't mention the bees! Way cool.
I'm an apple seed... I'd love to be in your basket though I rarely blog about APLS.
Crab-APL here. I'm just starting out, and dragging the husband kicking and screaming all the way, but it helps to be in good company and see how others are handling their journey.
I'm an APLS! :) Please add me to the basket. Such a great idea. I look forward to perusing the list and discovering some new blogs.
I'd like to be an apple! Unfortunately, I've gotten old and soft so I'm more like apple sauce. I'd love to be in your basket even if I'm squishing out the bottom. Looking forward to reading my way through the whole bushel.
Oh man! Reading people's apple-ness comparisons is hysterical! I'm an APLS. And I am trying as hard as I can to me more and more so every day. Please add me.
Plop me in the basket, please! I don't know what kind of APLS I am, but I would like to end up in a pie. :)
She-Ra: Welcome, little apple seed! All the better. We can't all talk about APLS all the time. Variety is the spice of life . . . and the bushel basket.
Mist: Cra-APL. I love it! Good for you. Drag away. He'll eventually adjust. Get a few local meals in him and he'll be green putty in your hands. Well, a girl can dream.
Green Grrl: Welcome. I too love finding new people to connect with.
IB Mommy: I'm old and soft too - especially around the middle. Don't look too closely.
Ellen: I know. Who knew there were so many punsters out there.
Donna: Pie it is! I actually want to end up pie too. Or maybe apple butter. That is really good as well.
Hi Green Bean,
Well over here we are not actually blogging right now but APLS we are aspiring to be.
I would love to be included in your bushel.
Kind Regards
Belinda
I'm a bit wrinkly but still appleish and trying hard in places. An old newfangled APL. How bout that!
Viv in nz
I'm a crisp and juicy low-chill resistant Honeycrisp. Just keep me away from those wormy ones.
I think it would be nice if you also listed where the people on the list live.
Thataway, if people actually (gasp!) want to meet together in person they know who is in their area.
Just watch out for the "I HATE APLS" Facebook group!
Sign me up! No blog of my own yet, but I love reading and commenting on lots of apple-tastic blogs. :)
Also (since Ms. Crunch suggested we give our locations) I'm from Nashville, TN.
~Heather
I guess I'm an apple too. I was a little put off by the 'affluent' part of it, but given that it's global, I'm definitely in that group.
I am working on becoming an APLS through my website www.mygrandmawasgreen.com Please put me in the bushel.
Belinda: Welcome to the basket. We love all APLS - ones who are blogging and ones who are not and everything in between.
Knutty Knitter: Hey old newfangled APL - the best kind.
Crunchy: Honey crisp? Why am I not surprised. Those are reallllly good. I love the idea of dividing it geographically. Let me see if I can figure out a good way to do it. Oh, as to I HATE APLS, that's SO wrong, isn't it!
Heather: You sound apple-tastic yourself! Thanks for your location. I think it's a great idea and will figure out how to work that.
scifichick: I'm glad you've joined despite the Affluent part. Interesting how many of us (myself included) have a knee jerk reaction to that word.
April: We're all "working" on it. Welcome to the bushel basket. Delighted to have you. :)
I'm in the bushel, and I'll try not to be a "bad" APLS. Snort.
I'm in. A local green apple with worms.
Sorry- realised I'd left a very important word out of the last comment- rendering int incomprehensible!
Anyhow- I'm in. Im not great at the LS bit but I'm really trying!
i don't have a blog but i love reading this and other green blogs. i'm an apls, so please count me in the basket as well, and i look forward to looking into all the other bloggers on this list, yet to be "picked" for reading...support and learning always welcomed.
Shannon: Your a tart little apple, aren't you!
Katrina: Sustainably grown in one of those beautiful orchards in Sebastapol?
Joanna: LS is a struggle for all of us. That is why it is important to bump around with other apples - share ideas, give support, and be surrounded by friends.
Becky: Welcome! I love it when non-bloggers join in the conversation. Your voices are very important. Jump in and pick away. :)
ok- add me to the basket- I'm an APLS! I like your definition of affluent- when I first saw that word I thought "well I don't fit in that category" but when you put it like you did- you're right - we (us in the USA) are affluent compared to other countries. And also we are "rich" in life! Can't wait to check out the other varieties in the basket.
Julie: It is all a matter of perspective, isn't it? Plunk. You're in the basket.
I think I'm an APLS. Add me to the bushel, please!
Welcome, Emily! Sweet and crunchy. :)
I'd love to be added Green Bean. I think I would qualify as an APLS. It's a great idea. Kudos.
P~
Welcome P. You'll fit right.
Having been away for a while. I am late to the game. So many APLS, but still no oranges. I volunteer to be the orange in the bushel basket!
I'm thrilled that you're bringing us all together, but mildly concerned that my nightly blog reading is going to take hours after I find a lot of cool new people I want to read!
Hi there. No idea how I could have missed this post. Yes, please do add me to the list.
Cindy: Um, okay. If you think you're an orange, I'll play along. ;-) You are in.
crstn85: It is a risk, I tell you. My reading list keeps growing and growing.
Beth: You are one of the most apple-i-cious folks I know. Plunk.
Slinking in late to join the party...
How did I miss this!
I'm in? Preggy brain is faaaaiiilllinng.
Berry Bird: Got you! I'm so glad you left the comment on the APLS and Oranges. EVERYONE should feel welcome in this endeavor!
Green Plan(t): Yeah! You're in the basket. There's another Green Vegas blogger in the basket. You might check each other out and maybe even meet up at some point!
I'm a little late...but absolutely add me to the APLS basket. I'm hungry for some new like-minded friends!
Thanks so much for your great explanation of APLS. What a great acronym you coined! I was very surprised about the findings on the "Global Rich List." Please add me to your bushel . . . I'm on my way to ripening, call me a still slightly tart Macoun (my favorite apple that we grew in our orchards)!
Mindful Momma: Never too late! Go ahead. Take a bite.
Everyday Woman: Yum. You sound delicious! I'm glad that you like the acronym. I like it because it is positive, uplifting and, I think, fitting. The Global Rich List was a huge shock for me. Guess I'll never complain about not having what I want again. BTW, Abbie at Farmer's Daughter has a great post up right now on this very topic.
Sweet! I love finding greenies in Las Vegas. I guess it's not just hard for plants to be green here (yuk yuk yuk).
I'm a baby southern apple.
Baby steps - but lovin' it!
~Mad(elyn) in Alabama known as ~Mad
Green Plan(t): You're such a plant!! ha ha ha. Any desire to be a regional group organizer?
Mad: I'll add you to the Bushel Basket over at the APLS blog
lol I'm just a giant dork, that's all. ;)
You know, I'm flattered that you would ask! It would be a couple of months before I could do anything serious (heat + new baby, ack!), but I've wanted to start something here in town to create more community among the green-brains.
So... sure! :D
I'm a little late getting in on this, but I have put the graphic up on my blog and love being an APLS!
Great concept! I'm on board!
Cheers!
Jamie
I would like to be added to the basket. I would love to get involved more and be able to network with people.
